Ireland’s May 2026 employment-permit changes: what actually changed
Ireland changed its employment-permit occupation lists in May 2026. Six roles were added to the Critical Skills list, nine were removed from the Ineligible list, two received new General Permit quotas and 15 existing quotas were renewed. The underlying occupation lists took effect on 13 May; the review outcome was announced on 28 May.
1. Added to the Critical Skills Occupations List
- Agronomist
- Construction planner/scheduler
- Community eye care
- Intellectual property professionals
- Geospatial surveyor, including land and geomatics surveyors
- Games-industry riggers
Plain-English meaning
These roles may now support a Critical Skills Employment Permit where the exact occupation, qualifications, salary, employer and other permit conditions are satisfied.
A broad job family is not enough by itself. The official list warns that eligibility may depend on the specific skill or specialism listed within the occupation category.
2. Removed from the Ineligible List
These roles became potentially eligible for a General Employment Permit:
- healthcare pharmaceutical technicians;
- dental hygienists;
- plastic-lining technicians;
- steel fixers;
- fencing operators and erectors;
- curtain wallers;
- printers;
- industrial machine knitters;
- concrete-pump operators.
Plain-English meaning
“Removed from the Ineligible List” means a permit is no longer ruled out solely because of the occupation. It does not mean every vacancy or candidate now qualifies automatically.

5. A fresh Labour Market Needs Test may still be required
For the two new quota roles and several renewed quotas, the Department required a new Labour Market Needs Test. Where advertising began on 13 May, the earliest valid application date was 10 June 2026; otherwise, the relevant period runs from the actual start of the test.
The LMNT generally requires the vacancy to be advertised through JobsIreland/EURES and another online platform for at least 28 consecutive days.
6. What to check before treating a role as viable
1. Exact occupation
Does the work—not merely the advertised title—fit the relevant occupation or specialism?
2. Permit type
Is the realistic route Critical Skills, General or another permit?
3. Salary
Does the remuneration meet the current threshold for that permit and occupation?
4. Employer
Is the employer willing and able to support the process?
5. LMNT or quota
Is a Labour Market Needs Test required, and is the relevant quota currently open?
Quota availability can change. The Department’s live notices have previously recorded quotas filling and later being renewed, so the page should direct users to check the current official notice before acting.
7. The practical takeaway
A list change is an opening, not an approval. Use it to decide whether the vacancy deserves serious investigation—not to tell an employer or candidate that a permit is guaranteed.
